Council of AuD Program Directors
- Petition to ASHA Certification Council to Remove the Requirement for Students to be Supervised by ASHA Certified Audiologists
The ASHA Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) has new standards for Audiology doctoral programs, effective Jan. 1, 2008. These standards have deleted references and requirements for the CCC-A and state that “all individuals providing clinical education, are qualified and competent by virtue of their education, experience, and professional credentials to provide academic and clinical education assigned by the program” which, according to Dr. Amy Wohlert, Past-Chair of the CAA, “might not include CCC-A.” This means that students may graduate from an ASHA accredited program without being supervised by a preceptor with the CCC-A. However, the ASHA Council For Clinical Certification (CFCC) does not fully recognize these new ASHA accreditation standards. They will not issue the CCC-A to a graduate of an accredited program unless the student has been supervised by a preceptor with CCC-A. A working group of the Council of AuD Program Directors has developed a petition to the ASHA Certification Council to remove the requirement for students to be supervised by ASHA certified audiologists. The petition is asking the ASHA Council for Clinical Certification to recognize that graduates of an Audiology program that is accredited by the ASHA Council on Academic Accreditation have met the qualifications to enter to practice and, therefore, should be eligible to apply for voluntary certification. Please read the petition and, if you agree, please enter your name and affiliation. This petition will be sent to the ASHA Council Clinical Certification, the U.S. Department of Education, and the Council on Higher Education Accreditation which recognize the CAA.

AAA Foundation
- AAAF Annual Campaign Supports University Research
The AAA Foundation has high hopes for what it can accomplish in 2008! The Foundation’s mission is to raise funds to support programs in education, promising research and public awareness, and its first priority annually is the funding of the Academy’s Research Awards. As audiologists in academia you know first-hand the value of research to the profession and to those who experience hearing loss. And of course, you know the cost of this research as well. At this time we ask you to join us in making a real difference in audiology and hearing science with a donation to our Annual Campaign. Make your tax-deductible gift online when you renew your Academy membership. To restrict your gift to funding of the Research Awards, call the Foundation Office at 703-226-1049.
- Three James Jerger Awards for Excellence in Student Research to be Presented in 2008
Since 2005 the AAA Foundation has funded the James Jerger Awards for Excellence in Student Research. These two $500 awards have been made annually thanks to generous giving from an anonymous donor. This donor was overwhelmed by the quality of research presented during the 2007 Poster Presentation and has offered to increase funding for these awards beginning in 2008. Encourage your students to submit a poster for presentation at AudiologyNOW! 2008 and to compete for one of three awards to be made in Charlotte.
