Module 1: Legal & Ethical Issues in Audiology Practice; Billing & Coding
Chapter 1 and Chapter 7 (2 hours)The participant will be able to:
- Differentiate between licensure requirements and Code of Ethics principles
- Identify common areas that apply to both licensure and an audiologist's Code of Ethics
- Identify the legal requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, Stark Laws, and Federal Anti-Kickback Act
Module 2: Ethics & Professionalism
Chapter 2 and Chapter 5 (2 hours)
Participants will be able to:
- Define professionalism
- Recognize intrinsic and extrinsic threats to a profession.
- Identify key components to professional communication
Module 3: Ethics in Research
Appendix 2 (1 hour)The participant will be able to:
- Discuss the role of Institutional Review Board oversight of research
- Identify ethical issues involved in publication authorship
- Recognize what constitutes a conflict of interest in conducting research and discuss the proper methods of disclosing potential conflicts of interest
Module 4: Ethics in Academia
Chapter 9 (1 hour)The participant will be able to:
- Discuss the ethical underpinnings of quality teaching, accurate student evaluation
- Discuss issues related to integrity in scholarly activities and student academic dishonesty
- Identify areas of conflict of interest within academia
Module 5: Ethical Issues for Preceptors
Chapter 8 (1 hour)The participant will be able to:
- Identify Code of Ethics rules that relate to supervision of staff and serving as a preceptor to students
- Describe the appropriate roles of university faculty and community preceptors
- Discuss how student supervision minimizes the preceptor's dilemma of wanting the highest quality care for patients while also wanting students to have opportunity for professional growth
Module 6: Ethical Reporting of Abuse & Neglect
Chapter 6 (1 hour)The participant will be able to:
- Define child and elder abuse and neglect
- Identify situations that require audiologists to report suspected abuse and neglect
- Identify the appropriate means of reporting abuse and neglect concerns
Module 7: Analysis of Ethical Dilemmas
Chapter 3 (1 hour)The participant will be able to:
- Define ethics, morals and values
- Describe different approaches to the analysis of ethical dilemmas and conflicts
- Analyze ethical dilemmas
Module 8: Conflict of Interest
Chapter 4 and Appendix 1 (1 hour)Participants will be able to:
- Discuss why the Academy developed guidelines on conflict of interest and describe the parallels of the Academy's guidelines to conflict of interest guidelines developed for physicians in their dealings with pharmaceutical manufacturer's representatives
- Identify situations that constitute a conflict of interest in relationships with manufacturers
- Identify types of interactions with manufacturers that do not pose a conflict of interest
Module 9: The Code of Ethics & the Ethical Practice Board
Foreword, Code of Ethics of the AAA, and Chapter 10 (1 hour)Participants will be able to:
- Describe how a Code of Ethics promotes professionalism
- Describe how to report a suspected violation of the Code of Ethics
- Identify the steps in the process of deliberation of an ethics complaint
- Describe the procedures for reporting a suspected violation
