PhD Networking Breakfast at AudiologyNOW!

Thursday morning , April 15, at AudiologyNOW! 2010 began bright and early for 27 doctoral students who attended the PhD Students Networking Breakfast.   The student investigators had the chance to meet in a relaxing environment over hot coffee and a delicious breakfast to discuss the rewarding opportunities a research career in audiology can provide.  The discussions led to identifying three key needs:  a place on the Academy Web site for PhD-related information; an opportunity to connect with other student groups with an interest in hearing and balance; and an opportunity to connect with mentors who can counsel them on the research process.  The incoming 2010-2011 SAA vice president, Allison Hearn, will be serving as the board’s liaison to PhD students, charged with reaching out to the profession’s future scientists to help meet these and other identified needs.

In addition to the networking breakfast, students who are considering studying for a PhD were welcomed by faculty at PhD programs Programs Fair held on Friday.  Based on the success of this new event at AudiologyNOW!, there is a need for more information on doctoral study.  A research career in the hearing and balance sciences is not only rewarding, it’s essential for the future of the profession.  If you’re thinking about a PhD, or know someone who is, talk to your faculty or email Allison today.
