Jacobson (2012) reports that 50 million people in the United States may have experienced tinnitus. Of those, 16 million seek relief from professionals. Jacobson summarized the Newman and Sandridge (2012) article regarding the cost effectiveness and cost utility of tinnitus management tools. If one were to compare traditional sound generators (SGs) to the Neuromonics Tinnitus Treatment (NTT) while using the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) to measure tinnitus sensations six months post-therapy, Newman and Sandridge report no significant differences in THI results when comparing SGs to NTT.
However (and of significant importance to many patients and professionals), the cost per THI unit of improvement (the THI has a 1-100 point scale) was approximately $600 per unit using the SG and almost $1800 per unit using the NTT. In a separate recent study, Parazzini and colleagues (2011) reported no statistical differences between SG and hearing aid amplification (combined with Tinnitus Retraining Therapy counseling) with regard to successful management of the tinnitus patient.
