Hearing Loss in Nursing Homes

February 14, 2018 In the News

As audiologists, we are uniquely aware that the elderly are disproportionally impacted by hearing loss and are aware of solutions that might be beneficial for those with hearing loss. Is this knowledge shared by all professionals who work with the elderly?

McCreedy et al (2017) recently wrote an article in the Journal of American Medical Directors Association titled “Hearing Loss: Why Does It Matter for Nursing Homes?,” whereby they review data regarding the prevalence of hearing loss among nursing home residents, describe potential communication difficulties for those with hearing loss, and provide an overview of management strategies for nursing home residents with hearing loss.

The assessment and management strategies reviewed in their article are from Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ Long-Term Care Facility Resident Assessment Instrument 3.0 User’s Manual, Version 1.15.
