The Academy Hears You. We’re Working for You.

The Academy leadership continues to work on behalf of members! This update highlights some of our current initiatives.

Academy Advancing Audiology on the Hill

In follow up to the Academy’s announcement in December of a position on the Audiology Patient Choice Act (APCA) going forward for this new Congress, the Academy leadership has engaged in conversations with ADA leadership about a collaborative path forward. Academy staff has met with the offices of the Congressional sponsors of the bill to express our position of support for the bill with the opt-out provision. We will continue to meet with our Hill contacts to introduce the Academy to new members of Congress and to discuss the APCA and other important topics to audiologists with key elected officials.

Academy Approaches ASHA to Form Joint Committee

We reported previously on the collaboration between the Academy and ASHA on a document to give to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) outlining best practices for audiology relative to the Captioned Telephone System (CTS) federal program. Given the success of this initiative, the Academy has reached out to ASHA and proposed forming a joint committee for developing guidelines and other documents important to the profession. We are hopeful that ASHA will be interested in moving forward quickly on this extended collaboration that will benefit members of both organizations and the people we serve.

Consumer Reports Article Highlights Audiology

The January article in Consumer Reports –  “Do You Need a Hearing Test? Expert advice on when—and how often—to get this vital sense checked" –  represents ongoing efforts by the Academy to provided expert content to educate the public. Facilitated by our PR consultant, Bendure Communications, the article includes interviews with leaders within the Academy and also recognizes the Academy as a key resource. Since contracting with Bendure Communications, the Academy has been tracking increased recognition for audiology and our organization in various media outlets. JAAA Articles Appear Online More Quickly

We are happy to announce implementation of new processes that are significantly reducing the time lapse between submission and publishing for articles in the  Journal of the American Academy of Audiology  (JAAA). The time between article submission, acceptance, and online publishing (“publishing ahead of print”) is approximately two months!

Fee Waived for First 100 ACE Registrants

Thanks to our generous sponsors, Audigy and Phonak, the Academy was able to waive the fee for the first 100 registrants of the inaugural Audiology Career Enhancement (ACE) Symposium to be held on March 27 at AAA19. This symposium is an example of new programming being offered at the conference to provide audiologists with useful strategies and resources for career advancement.
