President’s Message: Research, Scholarships, and Grants…Oh My! What Opportunities We Have
Message from Catherine Palmer, PhD | December 2019
Jerry Northern Scholarship in Pediatric Audiology
The AAA Foundation is excited to announce a new scholarship opportunity for students interested in pediatric audiology. Dr. Jerry Northern has graciously donated to the Foundation to award three students with $10,000 each in tuition funding and $500 each for travel expenses to the AAA Annual Conference and HearTECH Expo. Dr. Northern has agreed to fund this scholarship for three years.
More information will be available on the AAA Foundation website by December 6. Applications are due January 15, 2020.
PCORI Grant Awards
In its latest approval of $70 million to support research, the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (known as PCORI) has included hearing-related intervention research among the 21 funded studies that focus on improving health conditions that impose high burdens on patients, their families, and the health-care system.
Four Academy members from Northwestern University and the University of Pittsburgh lead two different awards that are receiving funding. Since its authorization by Congress in 2010, PCORI has funded outcomes research targeted at a wide range of topics but has made little investment into research for hearing-related interventions. May these two recent awards be the beginning of a shift, and I urge audiology researchers to be on the lookout for future PCORI award opportunities.
Academy Research Conference
The Academy’s commitment to advancing research continues with the Academy Research Conference (ARC) supported by the NIDCD of the NIH under award number R13DC016546. ARC 2020 will be held on Wednesday, April 1, (first day of AAA 2020 + HearTECH Expo) in New Orleans with a theme of Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder.
Chaired by Dr. Linda Hood, this preeminent audiology translational research conference will feature an outstanding program of international and U.S. speakers. Register by February 1 and save.
Thanks to generous funding from the AAA Foundation, the Academy is again sponsoring its own Research Grants in Hearing and Balance program. The Research Initiatives Committee will evaluate grant submissions for the New Investigator, Student Investigator, and Student Summer Fellowship categories. Spread the word about the program and encourage submissions by January 31, 2020.
Another Academy-managed/Foundation-funded grant program also has a January 31 deadline. The Outreach Grant Program offers a small grant to individual members to support outreach efforts to referring providers at the local level. Breaking down barriers and increasing awareness of audiologists as key partners in holistic health-care delivery can be a role for each of us. The Academy’s Health Care Relations Committee awarded a $1,000 grant to Drs. Maryrose McInerney and Aviva Klugmann, both from the Hackensack Audiology and Hearing Aid Associates, to support their “No Adult Left Behind” hearing screening initiative. Bring your idea forward for possible funding!
