The mission of the American Academy of Audiology is to promote quality hearing and balance care by advancing the profession of audiology through leadership, advocacy, education, public awareness and support of research. As President-Elect in these difficult economic times as well as changes in the healthcare system, it is imperative to continue the work of the academy by focusing on growth of its membership in order to advance the goals and initiatives set by the Academy board and its members. As President-Elect I will focus on the following areas:
- Direct access by educating our legislators as well as to educate our members
- Audiology specialty certification and a new national exam
- Accreditation of audiology programs for audiologists by ACAE
- Research in hearing and balance
- Evidence-based practice and the collection of outcome data to verify effectiveness of treatments
- Uses of telehealth in audiology
In particular, I would like to see the Academy take the lead in shaping telehealth policies, practices and technologies as they relate to hearing and balance issues. We are already beginning to see the provision of hearing aid information directly from manufacturers to patients via their computers and smartphones.
Areas of Special Interest
- Adult and geriatric diagnostics and rehabilitation
- Telehealth and applications of emerging technology in audiology
