Academy Staff Person Kate Thomas (L) and Seattle Audiologist Dr. Kristiina Huckabay (R) represent the Academy at the NCSL Legislative Summit

On August 3-6, 2015, the Academy joined state legislators from across the United States for the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) Legislative Summit in Seattle, WA. This Summit is the largest meeting of state legislators and legislative staff, and is well-known for bringing both Republicans and Democrats together to address pressing state issues and influence federal policy. The Academy exhibited at this meeting, and used this platform as an opportunity to disseminate information about the profession of audiology, raise awareness for state and federal legislative and regulatory issues, and share the Academy’s public policy resolutions on a range of topics. Seattle-based audiologist Dr. Kristiina Huckabay and Academy staff person Kate Thomas represented the Academy at this meeting, fielding questions from legislators and legislative staff and discussing the issues pertinent to the profession.

The Academy has attended this meeting for a number of years, and each year state legislators seem to become more and more aware of the important role that audiologists play in the health care delivery model The Academy encourages all of its members to continue these educational efforts by becoming involved in their state academy and advocating for audiology on the state level.
