Academy Update on Federal Appropriations Activity

The House passed in a vote of 226-203 a bill that would provide funding for Health and Human Services (HHS) Department, including the National Institutes of Health.   Under this bill, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) would receive a total of $41.1 billion, an increase of $2 billion above the 2019 enacted level and $6.9 billion above the President’s budget request.  Included in this NIH funding is a 5%  increase over 2019 levels in funding to the National Institute of Deafness and Communication Disorders (NIDCD).  This stands in contrast to the President’s Budget proposal for NIDCD which called for a 13.9 % decrease from 2019 funding levels.

  • Additionally, this bill would provide an increases in funding for both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as well as the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).  These are the two principal agencies that fund the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Act.
  • The Academy will continue to monitor the appropriations process as it now transitions over the Senate.
