Audiologists don’t work in isolation.  We interact constantly – with patients, colleagues, students, administrators, suppliers, media, referral sources, interdisciplinary teams, insurance companies … the list is endless.  Despite working in a profession that requires frequent interaction with others, most audiologists have not had the opportunity to participate in educational environments focused on the most fundamental skills necessary to our profession: interacting with others to achieve desired outcomes.

The inaugural Audiology Career Enhancement Symposium will focus on developing or enhancing the critical skills necessary to interact efficiently, effectively, and influentially.  This full day, interactive session will offer attendees an opportunity to hear from communications and business experts about how to bolster the critical skills necessary to create a competitive edge, differentiate yourself, and push the boundaries of your capabilities as a colleague, a provider, an entrepreneur, or a leader.

Emotional Intelligence: The Habits and Practices of Successful Leaders

Laurie Baedke

Laurie Baedke, MHA, FACHE, FACMPE, is a faculty member and Director of Healthcare Leadership Programs at Creighton University. A sought-after speaker, author, and advisor, Laurie Baedke works with individuals and teams including early careerists, physician leaders, and senior executives. She has specific expertise in physician practice management, leadership development, organizational change, emotional intelligence, and strengths-based leadership.

Technical competence alone is insufficient to achieve the highest levels of success. Emotional intelligence is essential for clinicians and leaders attempting to cope with an increasingly complex and fast-paced world. But, what is emotional intelligence? How does it apply to healthcare? And, how do we use it to improve performance?

This dynamic and interactive workshop teaches the eight habits of peak performers gleaned from research studies in healthcare and other industries. We know that when it comes to our health, small changes can have a major impact if they become a habit. The same is true for key leadership skills. This workshop will focus on how to use these skills to be a more effective clinician leader. Regardless of whether you have formal authority or not and no matter where you are in your career, you'll walk away with an action plan that takes your leadership skills to the next level.

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the four components of Emotional Intelligence; self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management
  2. Develop strategies to increase Emotional Intelligence personally, and in those you lead
  3. List four small changes you can make that will have a positive impact on your performance

The science of cooperation, collaboration, and interacting with others

James Kane

James Kane, a behavioral scientist and consultant specializing in the study of loyalty and relationships. The author of two upcoming books, "The Loyalty Switch" and "Virtually Loyal," Kane has worked with many major industries. He has advised and trained organizations around the world ranging from Global 1000 giants to small, regional companies. Kane has taught at Harvard and Penn State University, and he is a frequent guest on CNN, CNBC, and Fox Business.

Nothing has accelerated the advancement of human beings as a species more than our ability to live and work with others. And yet, despite hundreds of thousands of years of practice, most people still aren’t very good at it. In this presentation, James shares the science behind cooperative behavior and the influences that impact our human connections. The revelations are surprising, if not shocking, but critically important for any organization looking to create a more cohesive, productive, engaged, and fulfilled team.
