SUMMARY:Concussion Complexities: The Importance of Audiology in Traumatic Brain Injury Evaluation and Management
DESCRIPTION:Presenters: \nRichard Allen\, AuD\nSara Jagger\, AuD\, PhD \nCEUs: 0.1 AAA / Tier 1 \nDuration: 60 minutes \nInstructional Level: Intermediate \nProgram Focus: Knowledge \nDescription: \nConcussion and traumatic brain injury (TBI) can occur at any age. Multiple medical providers are involved when an individual suffers from a concussion or TBI. Audiologists are an important part of this multidisciplinary team\, as symptoms can involve dizziness\, imbalance\, tinnitus\, hearing loss\, and auditory processing difficulties. Managing these individuals requires multidisciplinary teamwork\, and most audiologists need to go outside their usual comfort zone to do so. This webinar will discuss the team approach to concussion care\, why audiology is an integral part of concussion care\, and how audiologists can help patients with a concussion or TBI. \nLearning Outcomes: \n1. Describe the audiologists’ role in the multidisciplinary management of concussion. \n2. Evaluate the signs and symptoms of concussion related to audiology. \n3. Apply how audiologists can prevent\, evaluate\, and rehabilitate individuals with concussions. \nRegister Now

For children with congenital hearing loss\, a two-decade delay for data-driven advancements in diagnostic and habilitative audiological practices can have devastating effects on auditory\, speech\, language\, academic\, and social development. Adults with hearing loss also are at risk for impaired communication\, social isolation\, educational and vocational barriers\, dementia\, and poor quality of life. Since auditory implantable technology is rapidly advancing\, and candidacy indications are both expanding and overlapping\, attempting to stay up-to-date on the literature becomes a part-time job\, which is particularly difficult for full-time clinicians. \nThe 2024 Virtual Academy Research Conference (ARC) will bring together the latest discovery in auditory implantable technology from an esteemed group of clinician-scientists in audiology and otology. We will be covering topics including advances in auditory implant surgery\, asymmetrically driven neuroplasticity for bimodal and sequential bilateral cochlear implant (CI) recipients\, the role of genetics in clinical decision-making for candidacy determination and recommended intervention\, totally implantable technology\, single-sided deafness (SSD)\, highly asymmetric hearing losses\, and much more. \nProgram\n\nMorning Session 10:00 am–12:30 pm ET\nAfternoon Session 1:00–3:30 pm ET\nCEUs:\n.25 Tier 1 CEUs for morning or afternoon session\n.5 Tier 1 CEUs for full-day program\n\nView Full Schedule \nRegistration\nAvailable for half-day\, full-day\, or on-demand only. \n\n\n\n\nCategory\nARC 2024 Fee\n\n\nMember Half-Day\n$89\n\n\nMember Full-Day\n$135\n\n\nNon-Member Half-Day\n$150\n\n\nNon-Member Full-Day\n$240\n\n\nStudent Half-Day\n$25\n\n\nStudent Full-Day\n$45\n\n\n\n\nFunding for this conference was made possible [in part] by 1R13DC020893-01 from National Institute of Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.

SUMMARY:The One Percent: Working with Complex Tinnitus Patients
DESCRIPTION:Presenters: \nEmily McMahan\, AuD\nGail Whitelaw\, PhD \nCEUs: 0.1 AAA / Tier 1 CEUs \nDuration: 60 minutes \nInstructional Level: Intermediate \nProgram Focus: Knowledge \nDescription: \nMillions of Americans experience chronic tinnitus\, seeking support from audiologists to assess and treat their tinnitus. Many audiologists feel confident in addressing “run of the mill” or low needs tinnitus patients; however\, are uncomfortable with those patients with significant degrees of anxiety/depression/distress\, what we are referring to as the one percent. This webinar will focus on higher level tinnitus treatment to those patients with the greatest difficulties with managing their tinnitus. The difference between motivation and desperation will be discussed. Tools and techniques for working\, establishing critical referral partnerships\, and successfully working with this population of patients will be provided. \nLearning Outcomes: \n1. List factors that contribute to a patient being in a category of “catastrophic” tinnitus distress. \n2. Discuss addressing anxiety/depression\, sleep interruption\, and stress that impact the patient with tinnitus and tools for supporting these patients. \n3. Describe a plan for the audiologist to address potential caregiver fatigue with this population and how to be proactive in addressing these needs. \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:Unveiling the Truth About Cochlear Implants
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Meredith Holcomb\, AuD \nCEUs: 0.1 AAA / Tier 1 CEUs \nDuration: 60 minutes \nInstructional Level: Intermediate \nProgram Focus: Knowledge \nDescription: \nThe utilization rate for cochlear implants in the U.S. adult population is 2-12 percent. In large part\, this is due to ambiguity and confusion of cochlear implant (CI) candidacy amongst all hearing-health-care providers (audiologists\, physicians\, and hearing instrument specialists). Patients who need a CI often spend many years in hearing aids that are not providing adequate amplification and speech understanding. This webinar will cover how to identify CI candidates in your practice\, when to refer patients for CI evaluation\, and how to counsel patients through this process. Current CI technology\, candidacy\, and evidence-based outcome data will be discussed. Resources and tools for patients will be outlined\, and case studies will be used to demonstrate CI outcomes. \nLearning Outcomes: \n1. Participants will be able to identify patients who should be referred for a formal CI evaluation. \n2. Participants will be able to understand current FDA CI criteria for adults. \n3. Participants will be able to describe benefits of CI over hearing aids. \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:How Do You Solve a Problem Like Single Sided Deafness?
DESCRIPTION:Presenters: Melanie Lutz\, AuD; Virginia Milne\, AuD \nCEUs: 0.1 \nDuration: 60 minutes \nInstructional Level: Intermediate \nAvailable on AudiologyOnline \nDescription: \nSingle-sided deafness (SSD) poses unique challenges to both the patient and the managing audiologist as SSD negatively impacts the ability to localize sound as well as speech understanding\, especially in the presence of background noise. Clinical recommendations may be inconsistent as there is not a definitive best practice for the audiologic management of SSD so this presentation will review patients across the lifespan who pursued each treatment option and experienced varying outcomes. \nRegister Now
