SUMMARY:Integrating Trauma-Informed Approaches to the Audiology Setting
DESCRIPTION:Integrating Trauma-Informed Approaches to the Audiology Setting\nJune 5\, 5:00-6:00 PM EDT \nMany service providers are making the move toward providing trauma-informed care\, with some states even requiring that models be trauma- informed within agencies. This presentation will define trauma and trauma-informed care from a service provider’s perspective and review several examples of how trauma may show up in a service environment. \nWe will discuss unique factors impacting individuals and families in the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community including medical traumas and systemic/cultural traumas. Participants will review guidelines from SAMHSA publication\, Key Ingredients for Successful Trauma-Informed Care (2016) and be given practical guidelines for creating safety for those who have experienced traumas. This will include reviewing the role of consent as a service provider\, how to make treatment clear and predictable\, and creating emotional safety through open communication. Participants will leave with a better understanding of the concept of trauma\, how it continues to impact future services provided\, and how to make small changes in their approaches with patients while keeping these ideas in mind. \nLearning Outcomes \n1. Define and review key symptoms of trauma.\n2. Discuss the six Key Ingredients of Successful Trauma-Informed Care (SAMHSA).\n3. Identify several ways in which audiologists can improve their practice by providing trauma informed care. \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:Incorporating Ototoxicity Management into Clinical Pathways
DESCRIPTION:Speakers:\nAngela Garinis\, PhD\nCarmen Brewer\, PhD\nGayla Poling\, PhD \nCEUs: 0.1 AAA/Tier 1 CEUs \nDuration: 60 minutes \nInstructional Level: Intermediate \nProgram Focus: Knowledge\n\nDescription: \nIncorporating ototoxicity management into patient-centered care is feasible and critical for maintaining quality of life in patients at risk for hearing\, balance and/or vestibular loss across the lifespan. Monitoring for ototoxicity provides the opportunity to obtain a pathophysiological description of the longitudinal effects of the ototoxic agent on an individual’s auditory and vestibular systems. This information also aids our ability to address each patient’s needs and the identification of clinical risk factors associated with the development of ototoxicity in unique populations. Thus\, early identification\, prevention\, and mitigation of ototoxicity-related symptoms are recommended through the routine implementation of ototoxicity-monitoring protocols. \nLearning Outcomes: \n1. Identify current national guidelines and published consensus statements for ototoxicity monitoring protocols.\n2. Discuss current gaps and barriers for implementing a successful ototoxicity management program across diverse clinical populations.\n3. Describe screening measures and mobile technologies for potential use in an ototoxicity management program. \nRegister Now!

SUMMARY:Substance Use Disorders and the Vestibular System: A Rising Issue
DESCRIPTION:Presenter:\nAmanda Chiao\, AuD\, PhD \nCEUs: 0.1 AAA CEUs \nDuration: 60 minutes \nInstructional Level: Beginner \nProgram Focus: Knowledge\n\nDescription: \nThe oto-vestibulotoxic effects of certain prescribed medications have been well known for decades. These include aminoglycoside antibiotics\, loop diuretics\, platinum-based chemotherapeutics\, and some non-steroidal anti-inflammatories.  However\, case-reports and a few cohort studies suggest that substance misuse from illicit drugs\, opioids\, and alcohol also negatively affect vestibular and auditory function\, and may have mechanisms similar to oto-vestibulotoxicity. \nThe literature\, consisting mainly of single-study case reports\, suggests that illicit and prescribed opioid drug misuse can cause temporary or permanent hearing loss\, and\, more consistently\, alcohol misuse impairs balance function (Moreira et al. 2012; Schmidt et al. 2010) but could affect the peripheral vestibular organs (Belle et al.\, 2007; Sasa et al.\, 1982)\, thus there is likely differential effects based on substance type and use patterns. \nThis presentation will provide snapshot of the existing literature\, with an emphasis on the vestibular system\, and discuss the practical approaches to vestibular assessment in patients with suspected substance misuse-related vestibular dysfunction. \n\nLearning Outcomes: \n1. Describe basic vestibular toxicity mechanisms and predisposing factors in adults.\n2. Describe the existing literature on substance use disorders and the vestibular effects.\n3. Identify vestibular testing modifications for patients with substance misuse histories. \nRegister Now!

SUMMARY:The Audiology Clinical Education Network (ACEN): Creating Positive Change in the Final-Year Externship
DESCRIPTION:Presenters:\nErin L. Miller\, AuD\nIan Windmill\, PhD \nCEUs: 0.1 AAA CEUs \nDuration: 60 minutes \nInstructional Level: Beginner \nProgram Focus: Knowledge \nDescription: \nThe purpose of the doctor of audiology final-year externship is to provide an opportunity for doctoral students to gain hands-on skills through guided practice\, experience\, and mentorship. This final clinical experience provides students with an opportunity to encounter the demands that exist in a full-time clinical position where the primary focus is the patient. The desired outcome of the final- year externship is for the doctoral student to achieve the necessary skills to be an independent practitioner. As such\, the facility and preceptors in these facilities are an integral part of the clinical education provided by academic programs. \nThe Audiology Clinical Education Network (ACEN) grew organically because of a desire to improve student outcomes and has resulted in a collaborative effort to standardize elements of the audiology externship process across institutions. While prior attempts have been made to standardize the final-year externship process\, none of these efforts resulted in a consistent approach\, leaving both facilities and academic programs to manage the process in their own way. \nThe ACEN\, led by audiology preceptors at facilities who offer final year externships\, recognized the need for a consistent approach to externship applications\, interviews\, offers\, and acceptances. This resulted in the networks first outcome\, a standardized timeline. While a standardized timeline was the ACEN’s initial effort\, their purpose extends beyond this with members sharing best practices across institutions to further improve student outcomes. This session will explore the history of the final-year AuD externship\, rationale for creation of the ACEN\, and the networks current and ongoing efforts to share best practices in clinical education to create a positive change in the final-year externship. \n\nLearning Outcomes: \n1. Participants will be able to discuss the history of the final-year externship process.\n2. Participants will be able to identify the benefits of standardizing the final-year externship application\, interviews\, offers\, and acceptance timeline.\n3. Participants will be able to analyze the value of a more consistent institution approach to the final-year externship. \nRegister Now!

SUMMARY:eAudiology Webinar: Is COVID-19 "Brain Fog" Actually an Auditory Processing Disorder?
DESCRIPTION:Presenter(s): Robert M. DiSogra\, AuD \nCEUs: 0.1 AAA/Tier 1 CEUs \nDuration: 60 minutes\n \nInstructional Level: Intermediate \nProgram Focus: Knowledge \nDescription: \nLive web seminar on eAudiology.org. \nThe non-medical term “brain fog” has been used to describe the listening difficulties of adult COVID-19 survivors. Recent MRI research has identified reduced brain structure volume in several auditory areas of the brain that could affect auditory processing abilities. This web seminar will raise awareness of and attempt to prove that “brain fog” might actually be an auditory processing disorder. Specific tests (objective and subjective) will be reviewed to raise this awareness. Further recommendations will be made to manage these COVID-19 survivors. \nLearning Outcomes: \n1. Define the effects of COVID-19 on brain areas involved in auditory processing.\n2. Recognize the similarities between brain fog behaviors and auditory processing disorder behaviors.\n3. Differentiate which audiometric tests (objective and subjective) to select for COVID-19 survivors and what recommendations to make for patient management. \nView Event
