Academy Pleased About Indiana’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act

May 08, 2015 In the News

Dear Academy Members:

In late March, the state of Indiana received a great deal of attention for passing it’s version of the federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA). The American Academy of Audiology Board of Directors has been monitoring the discussion in Indiana and the concerns expressed by the Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community across the country. The Academy Board could not support moving forward with AudiologyNOW! 2017 in a state that would discriminate against any of our Academy members.

I’m pleased to report that on April 2, an amended version of the RFRA was passed that clarified the limitations of the law. It explicitly states this law cannot be used to “justify discrimination in any form." Indiana’s RFRA is similar in scope to laws passed in twenty other states. Additionally, the amended version has received the support of the American Unity Fund, a national LGBT rights organization.

The Academy is pleased that this issue has been resolved and we can experience the mid-west “Hoosier Hospitality” when we visit Indianapolis for AudiologyNOW! 2017, April 5-8.  This city was selected because of the lower hotel costs for attendees, fabulous dining and ease of getting around the city!  Indianapolis isn’t just about racing…USA Today rated Indianapolis the #1 convention city in America!
