Olson, Preminger, and Shinn (2013) examined behavioral effects of listening and communication enhancement (LACE) presented through DVD with training completed by new versus experienced hearing aid wearers. Twenty-nine subjects were assigned into three groups: (1) new hearing aid

(HA) users with training (experimental group), (2) experienced HA users with training (second experimental group), and (3) new HA users without training (control group). Subjects in the two experimental groups received 20 thirty-minute training sessions using the LACE DVD at home over four weeks. All subjects were assessed at baseline, and two and four weeks post-training. Analysis tools included speech in noise, rapid speech, and competing sentence tasks.

Olson, Preminger, and Shinn report that upon conclusion of the program, subjects in both experimental groups improved with respect to their ability to understand speech-in-noise (SIN) and their ability to understand competing speech. Of note, "The magnitude of improvement was greatest for new HA users…." The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) (as measured via the QuickSIN) improved for new HA users by 2.4 dB after two weeks and by 2.9 dB after four weeks. The control group improved 0.91 dB after four weeks. Of note, every 1 dB improvement in SNR (likely) translates to 8 percent (or more) improvement with respect to word recognition score (WRS). Therefore, an improvement of 2.9 dB SNR indicates a (conservative) improvement of almost 25 percent WRS with regard to SIN tasks.
