American Academy of Audiology Also Receives Honorable Mention

(RESTON, VA—March 6, 2008)—The American Academy of Audiology and musician Benjamin Jackson were recognized by the National Hearing Conservation Association (NHCA) at their convention, February 21-23, in Portland, OR.

Jackson, who wrote and recorded the Academy’s “Turn It to the Left” rap single, was recognized with the NHCA’s 2008 Media Award. In addition, the Academy was given an Honorable Mention, along with Dr. Sharon Kujawa and Richard Knox of National Public Radio (NPR), for their “support and advocacy” in “extending the reach of the music and its message across the country.”

“Turn It to the Left,” which Jackson performed at the convention, raises awareness of noise-induced hearing loss. The rap’s hook urges all to take the volume control and “turn it to the left” to prevent hearing loss from personal music players.

The NHCA 2008 Media Award is the second award won recently by the Academy for its noise-induced hearing loss campaign. Last December, the Academy won the 2008 Associations Advance America Award of Excellence from the American Society of Association Executives & The Center for Association Leadership for “Turn It to the Left.”

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a major public concern. It is estimated that more than 5 million children, or 13 percent, suffer from NIHL. Experts agree that NIHL can be prevented in users of personal music players by turning down the volume, or turning the volume dial “to the left.”

The NHCA was founded in 1976 and is dedicated to the prevention of hearing loss due to noise and other environmental factors in all sectors of society. NHCA’s Media Award was established in 1993 and recognizes producers of news features and/or writers who heighten public awareness of the hazards of noise.
