CIs for Children with ANSD and Normal Auditory Nerves
Breneman, Gifford, and DeJong (2012) report best practices for audiological management of a child with auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD) have yet to be developed. They evaluated 70 pediatric subjects, 35 of whom were diagnosed (15 females) with ANSD and 35 of whom were diagnosed (18 females) with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). The two groups were matched with respect to age at initial cochlear implant (CI) evaluation and months of CI use at test. The mean age at CI activation for the ANSD group was 38.5 months and 39.9 for the SNHL group. By the time testing was accomplished, the mean months of CI use was 71 months for each group.
The authors report that “many children with ANSD can clearly benefit from cochlear implantation…” Further, 32 of 35 children with ANSD achieved some open-set word recognition ability. Likewise, matched-pairs analysis of speech perception measures indicated no significant difference between the ANSD and the SNHL groups on any assessed measures. The authors recommend CIs be considered for children with ANSD and normal auditory nerves, who demonstrate poor progress with hearing aid amplification.
