As our Academy reached its 30th birthday in 2018 and our 30th annual conference just this past March (2019), it may be instructive to the younger members to recount the events leading to the founding of our professional home. It all began at the 1987 convention of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) in New Orleans. Before this event, the professional home of all audiologists in the United States was ASHA.
A culture of quality is needed if we are to bring audiology into the spotlight and highlight our expertise in hearing and balance. Ritz-Carlton co-founder and former president Horst Schulze states that we can create transactions every day, but until we place the person next to us as the most important person in the world in that moment, we will never create an experience.

Since the creation of the AuD, many conversations have taken place to evaluate audiology education and the externship, but few of those have included large perspectives from significant stakeholders—students and recent graduates. To address this, the Student Academy of Audiology Education and Externship Survey was disseminated in September 2018 to current graduate students, externs, and new professionals to further investigate areas of strengths and weaknesses in the current education model and the externship process.

As a new professional, I’ve had to learn how to become a clinical supervisor. While I learned the needed skills, I was fortunate to have very supportive, talented colleagues, as well as consistent contact from clinic coordinators at local universities.
It’s important that audiologists at all points in their career participate in the clinical supervision of AuD graduate students. New professional supervisors can offer a great deal to graduate students and their learning.
Here are some of the lessons that I’ve learned as I transitioned from student to supervisor.

Twenty years ago, a group of Academy members came together to develop a certification that would serve audiologists by verifying credentials in an independent process that offers an alternative to the American Speech–Language–Hearing Association Certificate of Clinical Competence–Audiology. They developed a program of rigorous education and experience verification with strong continuing education requirements and called it Board Certified in Audiology, in recognition of the substantial requisites.
