Issues in Otitis Media

Barrera (2009) reports that otitis media (OM) is a major cause of acquired hearing loss in developing countries. He notes that attempts to prevent OM are usually expensive, unsatisfactory, and/or difficult. Following
acute otitis media (AOM), chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) may present with persistent discharge from the middle ear through a tympanic membrane perforation. Barrera reports that CSOM accounts for 28,000 deaths worldwide annually, as CSOM can lead to mastoiditis, brain abscess, facial nerve palsy and even meningitis.
