Tax Reform: Tuition Waivers for Graduate Students
To close out legislative business for 2017, Congress focused on advancing comprehensive tax reform legislation. In November, the House of Representatives passed their version of a tax reform bill that included a provision to treat tuition waivers as taxable income. The Academy acted swiftly in concert with other organizations to prevent this provision from being included in the Senate version of the tax reform bill and the final tax reform package. This provision was concerning for many audiologists and doctoral audiology students. Because of the significant opposition, this provision was not included in the Senate Bill or the final tax reform package that was passed into law in late December. The Academy thanks, all of its members who contacted Congress to oppose this provision.
