Empowering Students
Scholarship Program 2022

Congratulations to the Recipients!

  • Foundation News

With its vision to support advancements in hearing and balance science that enhance the experiences of life, the AAA Foundation is committed to supporting audiology doctoral students as they continue their academic careers, learn exceptional clinical skills, and explore contemporary avenues of research.

To support the students, the AAA Foundation offers a variety of scholarship programs each year and is thrilled to announce the recipients of the 2022 Empowering Students Scholarship Program.

“Oticon, Inc. (Oticon Hearing Foundation) is proud to partner with the American Academy of Audiology Foundation Empowering Students Scholarship Program. Joining with the Foundation to support the success of Black audiology graduate students is an important step to creating a profession that draws on the strengths of all segments of our population. A more inclusive and diverse profession brings a broader perspective to hearing healthcare that improves our ability to provide life-changing benefits to patients from all backgrounds.”

The Empowering Students Scholarship Program, generously sponsored by Oticon Hearing Foundation, provides six $5,000 scholarships to students who show exceptional promise as clinical audiologists. Oticon, Inc. designates up to $20,000 of the available funds for Black/African-American students.

Congratulations to the 2022 Recipients

Kristina Bowdrie
The Ohio State University

“As a future Black audiologist and researcher, I am honored to have been selected for the Empowering Students Scholarship Award Program. I have dedicated the past six years to learning and developing clinical and research skills at The Ohio State University as a dual AuD/PhD student. I am eager for my future, which includes becoming an exceptional audiologist and hearing scientist, in addition to being a role model for other Black students interested in the profession. The financial support from the American Academy of Audiology Foundation and Oticon will allow me to continue focusing on my goals and lessening financial stress. Thank you for this honor and support!”

“I am honored to have been chosen as a recipient of this award, as it has motivated me to continue to advocate within the field of audiology. Being awarded this scholarship also has ignited my interest in mentorship, as the guidance I have received from my mentors has been integral in shaping my future as an audiologist, and I wish to someday impact others in a similar manner. Thanks to this scholarship, I look forward to engaging in my studies with reduced financial hardship, and plan to utilize a portion of the funds to attend professional conferences and events in hopes of continuing to expand her clinical skillset and to connect with other inspiring individuals within the field.”

“I am beyond grateful to accept the Empowering Students Scholarship. I’m grateful to the American Academy of Audiology Foundation for hosting the scholarship and to Oticon for sponsoring it. I cannot overstate the impact this scholarship has had and will have on my life. Initially, I was afraid to apply for the scholarship, but I applied anyway. I’m extremely proud of myself for putting myself out there and managing to put together an application that my peer’s found to be worthy. This scholarship has eased some of the financial pressures that I and many graduate students face. I now have opportunity to focus less on money and more on furthering my education. Truly, it has changed my life. Thank you to everyone who was involved in outing this scholarship together. You’ve made a difference in at least one life.”

“I am incredibly honored to receive the Continued Achievement Scholarship to help further my academic and clinical training. This generous award from AudiologyOnline will most certainly help ease the stress of combining work and graduate school. Also, the recognition of my hard work and dedication at this early stage of my career from others who have accomplished so much in the field of audiology is truly inspiring.“

“I am a fourth-year doctor of audiology student from the University of Iowa and am currently completing my clinical externship at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona. One aspect of audiology that has become abundantly clear to me, both from working with my preceptors and receiving this scholarship, is how much professionals want young audiologists to realize personal success in this field. This funding shows me that the companies and professional organizations I work with, like Oticon and the Academy, want to have a mutually beneficial relationship with clinicians. This scholarship alleviates the financial burden that living near Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale has presented; now, I can enjoy my world-class externship experience more fully, thanks to the financial support of the Empowering Students scholarship. That joy is possible because of the Academy, the Academy Foundation, and Oticon—I can’t thank you enough!”

“I am incredibly honored and grateful to have been selected as one of the recipients of the Empowering Students Scholarship. This generous award will allow me to focus on professional growth during my fourth-year pediatric externship. The Empowering Students Scholarship also serves as an inspiration to become a leader in our growing field, ensuring evidence-based care is provided to all patients and furthering my goal that patients who share my Latin identity feel understood and empowered as well.”

University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

The AAA Foundation will accept applications for the Empowering Students Scholarships and the Jerry Northern Scholarships in Pediatric Audiology for the 2023–2024 academic year beginning January 2023. The application deadline for both opportunities is May 31, 2023.
