About Dr. Yu
What are your clinical interests?
My primary clinical interest is hearing aid fittings—I especially enjoy working with millennial adults and exploring the range of hearing aid technology and options available to them.
What do you/did you love the most about your job?
I love having the flexibility to work on my own schedule and take the time to provide patients with quality care and really digging in to find the right option that works for them, rather than rushing to a one-size-fits-all fix.
What company or organization do you work for right now? If you’re retired, where did you last work?
I opened up my own practice about two years ago—Yu Audiology, a boutique independent audiology practice in Rockville, Maryland (DC suburbs), where I’m the owner and sole clinical audiologist.
What’s a project you’re working on right now? Why is it meaningful to you?
Right now, I’m developing marketing for hearing protection, with the goal of making it more accessible and appealing—especially since hearing protection tends to get overlooked compared to hearing aids.
How has your career benefited from being a member of the Academy?
It’s been a great resource as I opened up my own practice. Going forward, I’m looking to attend an Academy convention to refresh my learning in person, beyond the online training I’ve relied on so far.
Any tips or advice for new members on how to best leverage their Academy membership?
Take full advantage of the trainings and programs available. I believe there’s currently a leadership course being offered with Tulane, and I think it’s fantastic that there are programs designed specifically for our profession. Don’t just let the membership sit there; actively seek out what’s offered.
Fun Facts
Where is your hometown?
Alexandria, LA—a VERY small town smack in the middle of Louisiana. Not exactly a household name.
If you could bring back one TV show that was canceled, which one would you bring back?
Real Housewives of New York City, but the OG cast, not the reboot. Bring back Dorinda and the “clip it and save it” energy!
What are you reading or listening to at the moment?
I’m currently listening to Michelle Obama’s “Becoming” on audiobook during my daily commute. It’s incredibly inspiring.
Best vacation you’ve ever been on?
My honeymoon! My husband and I spent it exploring southern Italy—amazing food, endless spritzes, and pasta everywhere. Take me back please!!
Who is your hero, and why?
My dad. He moved from China to Taiwan as a kid in the 1940s during the war, and then immigrated to the U.S. in his 20s, eventually starting his own company. His resilience and work ethic, building a life and a business from nothing in a new country is really inspiring.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
Teleportation! I could grab a spritz in Italy, eat an amazing lunch in New Orleans, and be back at the practice in Rockville for a half day, no jet lag required.
