On October 27, the Academy along with the American Doctors of Audiology (ADA) and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) hosted a virtual congressional briefing entitled Optimizing the Delivery of Audiology Services Under Medicare. This informational briefing designed for congressional staffers highlighted the need for the Medicare Audiologist Access and Services Act of 2019 (H.R.4056).
Opening remarks were provided by the sponsor of H.R. 4056, Representative Tom Rice (R-SC). Academy President, Angela Shoup, PhD, spoke on the role of the audiologist in providing hearing health care and an ASHA representative spoke on the role of the audiologist in providing balance health-care services. Additional content was provided by staff members from the Academy, ASHA, and ADA on lessons learned during the pandemic, cost estimates, and expected savings of the legislation and Medicare modernization.
