The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced on March 20, 2026, the Administrative Simplification, Adoption of Standards for Health Care Claims Attachments Transactions and Electronic Signatures Final Rule. This rule establishes standards for the submission of clinical documentation to support health care claims and adopts standards for electronic signatures. As a result of the new rule, providers will not be able to use fax machines or standard mail to submit additional claims-related documentation. The new rule is effective May 26, 2026, and providers will have 24 months in which to comply (by May 26, 2028).
