Misophonia, traditionally defined as a condition involving a severe negative response to specific sounds, was only recognized as a medical condition within the last 20 years. Pawel and Margaret Jastreboff (2001) coined the term misophonia in an article discussing decreased sound tolerance, which proposed a working definition and described symptoms of patients suffering from misophonia.
