Updated CPT® Codes Released for Vestibular Assessment

The American Medical Association (AMA) recently released the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) 2027 code book that includes the numbers for the four new vestibular assessment codes announced in the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) CY27 proposed rule. The Academy reported in July to the membership about the codes that would be effective January 1, 2027, but the new code numbers were not available from the AMA at that time.

Two new codes for rotational vestibular assessment will cover the scope of the former 92556 and include additional detail: Code 92527 is for rotational vestibular assessment by sinusoidal harmonic acceleration (SHA) testing with calibrated, computer-controlled chair, with interpretation and report; and code 92528 is for rotational vestibular assessment by sinusoidal harmonic acceleration (SHA) testing with calibrated, computer-controlled chair, with interpretation and report, and with velocity step testing (VST).

Audiology supported neurology’s interest in developing new codes for Video Head Impulse Testing (vHIT) testing: Code 92513 is specific to vHIT (with recording, interpretation, and report) of the lateral semicircular canal function, whereas Code 92514 includes testing of both lateral and vertical semicircular canal function.
