As we are about to enter the fall and are getting closer to Halloween, some of you may be looking for some thrilling experiences. If so, have you considered heading to the state of Maine? Horror fans likely know of Stephen King’s association with the state of Maine. Do they also know that the sounds of the Maine woods may evoke memories of a horror film?
If not, the Bangor Daily News (Bayly, 2025) recently reminded their readers by republishing a 2023 article by Julia Bayly titled “Why the Maine Woods Sometimes Sound Like a Horror Movie.” The article mentions the concerns of a new resident to the area who thought she heard screaming in her rural surroundings.
While the sounds could have been something more sinister, the article suggests that the screams were likely due to the many animals who reside in the area like bobcats, foxes, lynxes, fishers, and porcupines.
