The State Policy Advocate Network (SPAN) held its final meeting of the year last week, closing out the fourth quarter with a focus on critical updates in audiology coding and reimbursement policy. Central to the discussion was the introduction of approved American Medical Association (AMA) Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes recently modernized to reflect more accurately the scope of audiology hearing device services.
Dr. Annette Burton, the Academy’s AMA CPT/HCPAC advisor, and Dr. Erin Miller, the Academy’s AMA RUC/HCPAC advisor, led the session, offering a detailed walkthrough of the CPT code development process. They explained how codes are proposed, reviewed, and approved through the AMA CPT process, highlighting the essential role of professional advocacy in ensuring audiology services are properly represented.
The speakers introduced the revised CPT codes, with the presenters outlining their clinical relevance, intended applications, and potential impact on reimbursement. They also shared plans for educating stakeholders and promoting consistent implementation across states.
The meeting reinforced the importance of collaboration among audiologists and professional organizations to advance equitable and effective reimbursement practices nationwide.
