Overview

H.R. 2757, the Medicare Audiology Access Improvement Act (MAAIA), was reintroduced into the 119th Congress by Representatives Bilirakis, Mullin, and Moran in early April of 2025. This bipartisan legislation aims to modernize Medicare coverage of audiology services by:

  • Eliminating the physician referral: by removing the pre-treatment order requirements, beneficiaries have streamlined access to audiologists, saving seniors out-of-pocket costs for extra office visits.
  • Reclassify audiologists as practitioners: reclassifying audiologists as practitioners under Medicare enables them to provide services through telehealth beyond the current September 30, 2025, expiration.
  • Ensure coverage of diagnostic and treatment services: support continuity of care and the profession by authorizing reimbursement for Medicare-covered diagnostic and treatment services.

The Academy will continue working with ASHA and ADA to advance MAAIA to ensure that audiologists can provide the full range of Medicare-covered diagnostic and treatment services that correspond to their scope of practice, just as they do under other programs and payers, so that seniors receive more appropriate, timely, and cost-effective audiologic care.
