Introduction
For patients with inner ear balance disorders, audiological testing is often the first step in their diagnostic journey. It is instrumental in helping them understand their symptoms, but it can also be a source of anxiety. While most audiologists have an understanding of the technical aspects of vestibular testing, some may not understand or appreciate the challenges many patient with a vestibular disorder face. Many patients go into audiological testing fearing their symptoms may be elicited/provoked. By adopting a compassionate approach, fears can be mitigated.
Audiologists can ensure that the diagnostic process is supportive by combining clinical best practices with a patient-centered approach. In this article, we explore how to prepare patients for testing, support them throughout the testing process, and ensure they feel heard and empowered.
