President’s Message: Academy Announces 2020 President’s Award Recipient

It is with great honor that the Academy announces this year’s President Award recipient H. Gustav (Gus) Mueller, PhD.

Dr. Mueller has contributed greatly to the audiology profession and the Academy over many years. His vast dedication to deliver meaningful education to audiologists and students has transformed many of us into better audiologists.

While this award is normally bestowed at our AAA Annual Conference, this year with our 2020 cancellation, we wanted to share this celebration with all of you in this announcement and video message.

Prevalence of Sensorineural Hearing Loss in Pediatric Patients with Sickle Cell Disease: A Meta-Analysis

The pathophysiology of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in children with sickle cell disease (SCD) is thought to be due to microvascular occlusion incidents that compromise oxygenation through the labyrinthine artery to the cochlea. Ischemia of the highly metabolic cochlea and Organ of Corti results in decreased oxygenation of the stria vascularis and a failure to maintain endolymph.

United Kingdom Sees a Surge In Ear Damage Cases Among COVID-19 Patients

An increasing number of people in the United Kingdom have developed tinnitus for the first time or have seen their symptoms worsen after having COVID-19, according to a media report.

Tinnitus affects nearly seven million people in the United Kingdom. The British Tinnitus Association (BTA) reported a 256 percent rise in the number of web chats from May to December 2020 compared with the same period in 2019, while calls to its helpline rose by 16 percent.

Healthy Hearing Outreach During COVID-19

When COVID-19 swept across the world, life as we knew it came to a halt. Large gatherings were canceled, schools were closed, and businesses were shuttered. With the abrupt change in daily living, new opportunities arose, as online usage increased. Facebook saw daily website usage jump by 27 percent from January 15, 2020, to March 24, 2020, in the United States (Koeze and Popper, 2020). Other platforms, such as Zoom, went from under two million daily users to over six million in the same period (Koeze and Popper, 2020).

The Results Are In: 2020 American Academy of Audiology Member Survey
