In anticipation of the final regulations for over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids, the Academy has prepared a range of resources to guide audiologists in adapting their practice and communicating with their patients. Resources available through the Academy have included frequently asked questions and responses, webinars, and legislative information.
With the August 16 release by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the final rule, “Medical Devices; Ear, Nose, and Throat Devices; Establishing Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids,” the Academy is preparing updated resources and engaging with media and agencies to ensure that the role of the audiologist is central.
The Academy’s OTC Hearing Aid Task Force has reviewed the rule and is preparing an analysis, as well as seeking clarification of key areas in the regulations that remain nebulous yet with potential implications for audiology practice. A summary, updated FAQs, and key talking points are forthcoming, as well as other resources to assist audiologists in educating patients about OTC hearing aids. The Academy resources will be disseminated through a variety of communications, including a webinar in the coming weeks to provide updated information.
We have also been fielding a large amount of media requests and interviews resulting in significant increases to the visibility of audiology, OTCs and the role of the audiologist, and hearing and balance health care. We have seen huge increases to our consumer content web pages and the Find an Audiologist directory.
A few highlights include:
We had interviews with MedCity, Dr Radio, AARP, KCBS Radio San Francisco, and more as they continue to come in. A comprehensive report of our media outreach, AuD in the Press, will be communicated to members in early September. We are continuing to field press inquiries and interviews.
