Need to Know
If you read past the subject line of this e-mail, you may be thinking— “Oh, no. Another e-mail to clog up my inbox. Where’s the unsubscribe button?” Hold on a second, though! If you promise to read this entire e-mail, we promise:
  • We’ll keep it short and sweet.
  • We’ll send subsequent e-mails no more than once a month.
  • We’ll keep you informed.
  • We’ll cover topics that are relevant for new professionals.

Wait a second—who is "we"?

“We” is the New Professionals Committee. We’ve been around for a few years now, and are tasked with identifying and promoting the needs of new professionals (NPs) within the Academy. Communication is a two-way street, and we want to improve our connections with all of our fellow NPs.

Many of us have OTC on the brain, and for good reason.

  • On August 3, the Senate passed the FDA Reauthorization Act, which includes a provision to direct the FDA to develop a category of over-the-counter hearing aids for adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. The House previously passed the legislation in July 2017. On August 18, the President signed the FDA Reauthorization Act into law.
  • What does this mean? It means we’re one step closer to the existence of “OTC hearing aids.” Now that the OTC hearing aid legislation has been signed into law, the FDA has up to three years from the passage of the legislation to begin the rulemaking process to develop the category of OTC hearing aids.
  • Visit the Academy’s website for more information on OTC hearing aids as well as the latest in Government Relations News.
Have You Heard?
The Academy has revaluated the requirements for individuals running for the Board. New Professionals are now eligible to be considered for Board positions.
New Professionals Spotlight
Ever wonder what career paths other recent grads have taken? Us, too! For our very first NP Spotlight section, we’ll introduce you to Margaret Koeritzer, who works at Fairview Health Services in the greater Twin Cities area of Minnesota. She works with a variety of patients, crossed state lines to practice after graduation, and thinks New Professionals can take an analytical look at protocols in their clinics. Read more about Margaret and her thoughts here.
Other News Bytes
  • It’s still early, but keep your ears tuned when it comes to AAA 2018, April 18-21, in Nashville. There will be a new, special event just for New Professionals.
  • If you’re looking to discuss OTC hearing aids and other hot topics with other NPs, join the discussions on our very own New Professionals Community page. It’s a safe space for us to engage in honest discussion.

Are we done yet?

Actually—yep! That’s it. Pretty painless, right? If you’re looking for more information before your next newsletter from us, feel free to:
