The Academy took action earlier this week to support Oregon Senate Bill 943, which aims to modernize the scope of practice for audiologists in the state. This legislation proposes changes to the definitions of “audiologist” to expand the practice of audiology, specifically including cerumen management, vestibular testing, and the ability to order and perform certain imaging and bloodwork. This language also amends a definition to include AuD programs accredited by ACAE.
The newly formed Northwest Academy of Audiology (NWAA), which combined the Oregon and Washington Academies of Audiology, has been at the forefront of this legislative effort. At a recent hearing for this bill, NWAA representatives, including past president Bryan Greenaway, AuD, and Katy Mawson, AuD, provided testimony supporting the bill.
To show support for the profession’s advancement, The Academy submitted a letter to the Senate Committee on Health Care, endorsing the passage of OR SB 943. This move aligns with the organization’s commitment to promoting excellence in audiology and advocating for the profession’s growth.
The Academy’s support for OR SB 943 is part of a broader effort to assist state audiology organizations in their advocacy work. As the bill progresses, The Academy will continue to monitor its development and provide support to the NWAA as needed. We recognize the potential benefits of modernizing audiology practice regulations while acknowledging the importance of carefully considering all aspects of such changes. The Academy has a document on the scope of practice considerations that can serve as a useful resource to other states considering similar legislation.
