Living life with tinnitus is difficult for everyone, but this can be especially true if your career revolves around music. The prevalence of tinnitus is staggering–approximately 25 million adults in the United States experience it (ATA, 2022). The causes of tinnitus are many including hearing loss, head injuries, and extended exposure to loud sounds to name just a few. For those in the music industry, the latter is a difficult risk to avoid.
Five producers from across the music industry were interviewed regarding their experiences with tinnitus. They spoke about how tinnitus impacts their lives and work and offered some advice for those who suffer. The advice incorporates what audiologists have been promoting for years, including turning down the volume, investing in quality headphones and earplugs, and acoustically treating your workspace.
