Because audiologists may see patients with diabetes, a data brief from the National Center for Health Statistics may be of interest.
In this data brief, Gwira and colleagues (2024) used data from the August 2021–August 2023 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to estimate the prevalence of diabetes in adults (20 years and older) in the United States, excluding gestational diabetes.
The total prevalence of diabetes (diagnosed and undiagnosed) during this time frame was 15.8 percent and was significantly greater in men versus women. The prevalence also increased with increasing age and weight status, but decreased with increasing education. The estimated prevalence of total diabetes in from August 2021–August 2023 was greater than the 9.7 percent prevalence reported from 1999-2000.
