Twenty Years Later: The Majority of Audiologists Are Doctors

In 1988, only 8 percent of U.S. audiologists held doctoral degrees. Of those, most held PhDs, most were males, and most worked in university settings. Things have changed. As of October 2008, Paarlberg reports that more than 6,200 audiologists have earned their AuD. Additionally, she reports more than 2,200 are currently enrolled in residential (traditional) AuD programs and another 1,500 audiologists are currently in distant education programs.

Deep in the Heart of Texas with Marion P. Downs

At the recent Texas Academy of Audiology (TAA) meeting held in Richardson, Texas, on November 14-15, 2008, Marion P. Downs was one of the featured speakers.

Ross Roeser, PhD, introduced Marion Downs. He noted that she has lectured in more than 15 nations, has an honorary doctorate from the University of Northern Colorado, and has two medals of achievement (University of Minnesota and University of Colorado). Dr. Downs has served as a pioneer, an advocate, a researcher, a clinician, and most recently as an author of non-audiology books.

How Many Audiology Programs and Students?

Windmill (2013) reports that over the last 25 years the profession has gone from 140 programs offering master’s degrees to 74 accredited programs offering the AuD.  Jerger (2008) determined the "ideal" number of audiology programs based on the quantity of audiologists in the United States as compared to the number of practitioners in medicine, optometry, dentistry, and more, and the number of their [respective] programs and determined the ideal number of audiology programs is five.
